PET-CT Introduction
Unlike traditional imaging examinations (such as CT and MRI) that focus on morphological structures, PET is an examination that visualizes cellular function and activity. Due to this difference, PET is of great significance in diagnosing diseases that could not be determined solely based on morphological structures until now.

Who Needs a PET Examination?

Individuals suspected of having cancer (for further confirmation)

Patients undergoing cancer treatment (for efficacy evaluation)

Patients with a history of cancer treatment (for regular follow-up examinations)

Characteristics of PET-CT

A full-body examination can be completed in a single scan.

The entire body, from the head to the upper thighs, can be examined through one scan.

It is almost painless and completed in a relatively short time. After receiving the drug injection, you will rest for approximately one hour, then lie on the PET scanner for only 10-15 minutes, and rest for about another 30 minutes before finishing the examination and going home.

It is highly valuable for the early diagnosis, staging, and diagnosis of metastasis and recurrence of cancer.

It can detect cancer cells that are more metabolically active than normal cells, which is combined with early diagnosis and the detection of metastatic lesions.

The Principle of PET-CT
All cells require glucose as an energy source. In particular, cancer cells proliferate more vigorously than normal cells and thus demand more glucose. Since glucose labeled with 18F-FDG emits minute amounts of radiation, PET scanners can detect and visualize the location of hidden cancer cells by capturing this radiation.
The drug FDG accumulates in cancer lesions, allowing us to determine the location and size of the tumor.

Examination Process

Fasting – Begin fasting 5-6 hours prior to the examination. (Plain water may be consumed in moderate amounts.)

Medication Administration – The imaging agent (18F-FDG) will be injected intravenously, and your blood glucose level will be measured simultaneously.

Rest Period – Remain at rest for 1 hour to allow the agent to distribute throughout your body.

Examination – Lie flat on the PET scanner for approximately 15-20 minutes for a full-body scan (from head to toe). Keep both hands raised during the examination.

Post-Examination Rest – The half-life of the agent is approximately 2 hours. After the image acquisition is completed, please rest in the lounge for 30 minutes. Do not leave until notified by the doctor or nurse.
