I just returned from Alaya Retreat Centre after spending 4 days there.
I’ve not done a yoga retreat before and what attracted me to this one was the flexible nature of booking any day of the week and staying as long as you want. They were great in emailing before my stay and checked to see if I needed a taxi from the airport, I made my way to a nearby town and got picked up from there.
For my first two nights I stayed in a nearby house as the main centre was full with a big group , they let me know the changes before I arrived and I didn’t mind as was with a smaller group. The house was in beautiful countryside, we did yoga outside and there was a pool. The room was comfortable. The yoga teachers Tania and Kendra were so welcoming and ensured everyone had what they needed.
The format for each day was a morning active flow / vinyasa at 9am followed by brunch at 11am , a workshop in the afternoon and an evening yin class at 5pm with dinner at 7pm. There was lots of time to relax in between, some of the group went off to explore surrounding areas, I enjoyed walking in the vineyards.
I’ve done lots of yoga before but would say I’m still a beginner as I don’t practice regularly. Tania and Kendra were excellent in their teaching, each had their own unique style and I enjoyed both. They checked in with the group to see if people were comfortable with them making adjustments to postures. The group had different abilities and they catered to all.
On the third day we moved to the main retreat centre. Alaya is nestled in a beautiful spot, surrounded by vineyards and the mountains in the distance. I loved the animals, they have vegetables growing there and it has a rustic warm feeling to it. The yoga shala was beautiful and above it a roof terrace , practicing yoga there with the views was special.
The vegetation food served was fresh and delicious. The team worked hard to create a welcoming environment. I enjoyed the communal aspect, eating with those who were working there and other guests from around the world.
My highlight was walking to the waterfall and doing a group meditation sitting on the rocks.
I also did the horse reiki healing with Ellen who created Alaya, this was a unique experience and I took lots from her insights.
I went seeking some time away from city life and to slow down. I left rejuvenated and reconnected with my joy and peace.
I wonder what my experience had been if I had visited when the centre was full, if it would have been different, but I had a great time.
I am grateful to the team at Alaya for their dedication, warmth and kindness. It was a special trip for me.
