FAQ

Queste domande frequenti provengono da pazienti reali che cercano assistenza medica tramite Bookimed. Le risposte sono fornite da coordinatori medici esperti e rappresentanti affidabili delle cliniche.

Which type of doctor should I see for coronary artery disease in Spain?

For coronary artery disease in Spain, you should see a cardiologist or an interventional cardiologist. These specialists manage blood flow issues using medication or procedures like stenting. Top Spanish doctors often hold PhDs and memberships in the European Society of Cardiology to ensure research-backed care.

  • Cardiologist. Specializes in diagnosing heart disease, managing medications, and performing essential stress tests or ECGs.
  • Interventional cardiologist. Performs minimally invasive procedures, such as angioplasty and stenting, to open blocked heart arteries.
  • Cardiac surgeon. Conducts complex operations, including coronary bypass surgery, if arterial blockages are too severe for stents.
  • Electrophysiologist. Treats heart rhythm issues that often occur alongside coronary artery disease, using pacemakers or ablation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many leading cardiologists in Spain, like Prof. Josep Brugada or Dr. Antonio Berruezo Sanchez, are pioneer researchers with 200+ publications. Choosing a doctor at a JCI-accredited facility like Centro Médico Teknon or Quirónsalud ensures they use validated international protocols for complex heart treatments.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize starting with a primary care doctor for initial symptoms like chest pain before moving to specialist care. They found regular follow-up visits were vital for adjusting heart medications and monitoring long-term recovery after stenting.

How do I choose the best coronary artery disease doctor for my case in Spain?

Select a coronary artery disease specialist in Spain by matching your diagnosis to a doctor's sub-specialization. Look for experts like Dr. Juli Carballo Garrido at Centro Médico Teknon who specialize in complex coronary stenting and chronic arterial blockages to ensure procedural precision.

  • Procedural history. Choose specialists who perform many specific treatments like angioplasty or coronary bypass surgery.
  • Sub-specialty focus. Dr. Juli Carballo Garrido focuses on complex coronary bifurcation lesions and chronic arterial occlusions.
  • Clinical credentials. Prof. Josep Brugada has published 350+ papers and previously led the European Heart Rhythm Association.
  • Multidisciplinary care. Top Madrid centers like Olympia Quironsalud integrate cardiologists and surgeons for heart team reviews.

Bookimed Expert Insight: When comparing specialists, prioritize those with leadership roles in international cardiac societies or university settings. Dr. Jose Angel Cabrera leads cardiology at Quirónsalud Madrid and directs translational research at the European University. This academic involvement ensures your treatment follows the most modern research-backed protocols, which is vital for managing progressive heart disease.

Patient Consensus: Patients value doctors who explain test results in plain language rather than rushing toward surgery. Many found that seeking a second opinion provided clarity when they felt unsure about getting stents.

Are there English-speaking coronary artery disease doctors in major Spanish hubs?

English-speaking coronary artery disease specialists are available in Madrid and Barcelona. Dr. Jose Angel Cabrera in Madrid and Dr. Juli Carballo Garrido in Barcelona lead major cardiology departments. These experts often hold international fellowships and use English for complex coronary stenting and consultations.

  • International training. Dr. Jose Angel Cabrera trained at London's Royal Brompton Hospital in cardiac morphology.
  • Subspecialty expertise. Dr. Juli Carballo Garrido focuses on chronic total occlusions and bifurcation lesion angioplasty.
  • Academic credentials. Professor Josep Brugada discovered Brugada Syndrome and has performed over 25,000 cardiac ablations.
  • Clinical research. Dr. Antonio Berruezo Sanchez authored 200+ papers, providing research-backed care for complex cases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patients seeking coronary care in Spain benefit from doctors with dual leadership roles. Specialists like Dr. Jose Angel Cabrera often manage cardiology units at both specialized private centers and university hospitals. This ensures patients receive technically advanced interventional treatments combined with rigorous academic standards.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that finding a specialist who explains medication history in English is vital. Many recommend choosing private hospitals in major hubs to ensure reception and nursing staff also communicate clearly.

When should I seek a second opinion from a different CAD doctor in Spain?

You should seek a second opinion in Spain when facing a major surgical recommendation, such as coronary bypass surgery, or if symptoms like chest pain persist despite current treatment. Specialists like Dr. Josep Brugada or Dr. Antonio Berruezo Sanchez offer advanced expertise for complex coronary artery disease or arrhythmia cases.

  • Surgical recommendations. A second specialist may find less invasive catheter-based options instead of open-heart surgery.
  • Persistent symptoms. Ongoing chest tightness or fatigue after stent placement requires a fresh diagnostic review.
  • Expertise mismatch. Complex cases involving coronary bifurcation lesions benefit from specialists like Dr. Juli Carballo Garrido.
  • Legal protection. Spain's Patient Autonomy Act 41/2002 legally protects your right to seeking second opinions.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spanish cardiology is highly specialized, and choosing a doctor by their specific sub-focus improves results. For example, Dr. Josep Brugada at Centro Médico Teknon is ideal for rhythm-related coronary issues, while Dr. Juli Carballo Garrido specializes in reopening chronic total occlusions using stenting. Accessing these specialists through private networks often bypasses the administrative delays found in public autonomous health systems.

Patient Consensus: Many felt a second opinion was necessary when initial plans seemed too rushed or vague. They noticed that having another doctor explain test results in plain language reduced their anxiety. Patients often regret waiting until symptoms worsened before requesting a review from a different heart specialist.

Specialists like Dr. Antonio Berruezo Sanchez and Dr. Jose Angel Cabrera serve as university professors. This means they apply the latest research and clinical trials directly to patient treatments, which is a major advantage for complex cases.

Patient Consensus: Patients value specialists at major university hospitals who explain clearly whether symptoms are heart-related. They often feel more confident when a doctor is comfortable managing everything from medication to angiography.
